Grain Highlights 20.09.2023

In almost the entire Brazil, very high temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius are being reported, which will hinder the planting of soybeans for the 2023/24 crop. In the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás, temperatures are reaching 45-46 degrees Celsius.

- SovEcon has lowered its forecast for the 2023/24 wheat production in Russia by 0.5 million tons to 91.6 million tons.

- As of September 20, 2023, Belarus has harvested 7.5 million tons of grain and rapeseed.

- According to MARS estimation, the average corn yield in the EU for 2023/24 will be 7.26 tons per hectare (-3% compared to August and -3% compared to the five-year average). Barley yield will reach 3.59 tons per hectare (3.6 and -14%), sunseed yield will be 2.2 tons per hectare (2.18 and -1%) and soybean yield will reach 2.83 tons per hectare (2.82 and +3%).

- According to Fedoil data, in August, 3.26 million tons of oilseeds were processed in the EU (+2.5% compared to August 2022), including 1.73 million tons of rapeseed (+16% and 1.83), 1.12 million tons of sunseed (-11% and +7%), and 0.41 million tons of soybeans (-14% and +39%). Since the beginning of the year, 25.95 million tons of oilseeds have been processed (24.81).

- According to Conab's forecast, the upcoming production of grains and oilseeds in Brazil for 2023/24 may reach 319.5 million tons, which is 1% less than the previous year, including 119.8 million tons of corn (-9.1%) and 162.4 million tons of soybeans (+5.1%).

- Most of Brazil is experiencing very high temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, which will hinder the planting of soybeans for the 2023/24 crop. In the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás, temperatures are reaching 45-46 degrees Celsius. There have been no significant rains, and the soils are dry. Postponing the planting until late October will put pressure on planting the second corn crop in the spring of 2024.

- During the period from September 5 to 15, Argentine farmers sold 2.64 million tons of soybeans in the soy dollar project.

- In September, Brazil traditionally reduces soybean exports. For the week of September 11-17, the country exported 1.4 million tons of soybeans, totaling 3.5 million tons since the beginning of September (2.6 million last year).

- According to ITS estimates, in August, Indonesia's palm oil exports reached 2.7 million tons (-2% compared to July and -34% compared to August 2022). India received 554,370 tons of oil, China 602,690 tons, the EU 406,280 tons, Pakistan 223,100 tons, and Bangladesh 66,470 tons.

- Egypt's state-owned company GASC has announced a tender to purchase 30,000 tons of soyoil and 10,000 tons of sunseed oil with delivery from December 15 to 31.

- Algeria is in negotiations to purchase 120,000 tons of milling wheat at a price of 272 USD/ton C&F with delivery within November-December. They have also bought 30,000 tons of feed barley of unspecified origin at a price of 223-225 USD/ton C&F with delivery in October and 80,000 tons of corn from Argentina.
