Grain Highlights 29.09.2023

The European Commission forecasts a wheat production of 125.3 million tons in the EU for the 2023/24 season (compared to 126.1 in the previous estimate and 125.7 in 2022/23).

According to ProZerno's forecast, Russia is expected to achieve a grain production of 140 million tons in 2023, marking the second-highest historical result. This production estimate includes 90.1 million tons of wheat and 20.8 million tons of barley.

From October 4th to 10th, 2023, the export tax on Russian wheat will be 4,564.6 rubles/ton (compared to 4,527.5 in the previous week), while the export tax on barley will be 1,251.1 rubles/ton (compared to 459.9) and the export tax on corn will be at 2,853.8 rubles/ton (down from 3,201.6).

From July 1st to September 29th, 2023, Ukraine exported a total of 6.538 million tons of grains (compared to 8.576 million tons the previous year). In September alone, 1.951 million tons were exported (compared to 4.278). The exported grains include 3.253 million tons of wheat (762,000), 613,000 tons of barley (762,000), and 2.649 million tons of corn (4.777).

As of September 25th, 2023, FranceAgriMer reports that 11% of corn areas in France have been harvested (a 5% increase for the week and 48% compared to the previous year). Additionally, 81% of these corn crops are in good or excellent condition (81% for the week and 41% compared to the previous year).

The corn production is projected to be 59.8 million tons (compared to 61.7 and 52.1). Wheat imports are expected to reach 6.5 million tons (compared to 4 in the previous estimate), while corn imports are projected at 20 million tons (compared to 17). Wheat stocks in the EU are estimated to reach 17.8 million tons (compared to 16.3), and corn stocks will be 17.8 million tons (compared to 17.3). The barley production is expected to be 48.4 million tons (a slight decrease from 51.5). Wheat exports are projected at 32 million tons, and corn exports are estimated at 10 million tons. The overall oilseeds production will be 19.6 million tons (compared to 19.1), with imports reaching 5.8 million tons (remaining unchanged).

In Chicago, for the week, commodity funds were net buyers of 4,000 corn contracts and net sellers of 3,000 soybean contracts and 1,000 wheat contracts.

According to GAPKI's estimate in July, palm oil exports from Indonesia reached 3.5 million tons (up 2% from June and 22% from July 2022). Production for the month reached 4.4 million tons (up 10% from June), while stocks decreased to 3.1 million tons (down 14%).

GGN Research predicts that India will have record initial vegetable oil stocks of 3.37 million tons for the 2023/24 season (compared to 2.46 million tons in 2022/23), leading to reduced imports of 15.8 million tons in the upcoming season (down from 16.6).

Iran has purchased 120,000 tons of soymeal and an undisclosed quantity of corn.

Algeria has procured 60,000 tons of corn at a price range of 260-262 USD/ton C&F with delivery scheduled for October.
