Grain Highlights 15.04.2022

As of 15.04.2022 the sowing campaign of spring crops in Ukraine reached 1.936 million hectares (11.4% of the plan), including spring cereals areas of 1.239 million hectares (16.6%).

- In the week starting on 20.04.2022, the export tax on Russian wheat will be 110.7 USD/ton (101.4 a week earlier). The export tax on barley will be 76 USD/ton (75.4) and the export tax on corn will be 66.1 USD/ton (70.6).

- From 15.04.2022 Russia imposes an export quota on sunseed oil of 1.5 million tons and on sunseed meal of 700,000 tons.

- As of 15.04.2022 the sowing campaign of spring crops in Ukraine reached 1.936 million hectares (11.4% of the plan), including spring cereals areas of 1.239 million hectares (16.6%). 146.4 million hectares (76.2%) were sown with spring wheat, 742,900 hectares (55.6%) were sown with spring barley and 122,600 hectares (2.2%) were sown with corn. 14,100 hectares were sown with spring rape (42.4%), 433,700 hectares have been sown with sunseed (6.7%) and 20,900 hectares have been sown with soybeans (1.6%).

- Strategie Grains forecasts a reduction in cereal consumption in the EU in 2022/23 (mainly for feed purposes), including wheat consumption of 99.1 million tons (-1.6 compared to the previous estimate and 99.3 in 2021/22). Barley consumption will be 45.3 million tons (-1.1 and 45.7), corn consumption is expected at 77.5 million tons (-1.1 and 78.6). Exports of wheat will reach 30.3 million tons (+0.5 and 31.4), barley exports are projected at 6.9 million tons (+0.4 and 7.6) and corn exports are estimated at 4.5 million tons (+0.4 and 5.4). In the new season, the wheat production in the EU will be 126.7 million tons (-3.3 compared to 2021/22). The barley production will be 51.9 million tons (unchanged) and the EU corn production will be 67.1 million tons (-2.5).

- The European Commission forecasts larger areas of cereals in the EU in 2022/23, including winter wheat areas of 20.7 million hectares (+1% compared to 2021/22) and winter barley areas of 4.8 million hectares (+1%). Corn areas will increase by 2% and durum wheat areas will decrease by 4% to 2.1 million hectares. The grain production will reach 297.7 million tons (+1.5), including soft wheat production of 131.3 million tons, barley production of 53.6 million tons, corn production of 74 million tons. Exports of cereals from the EU will be 41.4 million tons (+11.5).

- According to FranceAgriMer, as of April 11, 2022, 8% of the planned areas in France have been sown with corn (-16% compared to 2021). 92% of winter wheat crops are in good and excellent condition (92% a week earlier and 86% a year earlier).

- As of 01.04.2022, sunseed stocks in Kazakhstan were 617,000 tons, rapeseed stocks were 133,270 tons and soybeans stocks were 58,340 tons. The total stocks of oilseeds were 1.41 million tons (1,836 as of 01.01.2022).

- On Thursday, commodity funds in Chicago were net buyers of 2,500 contracts of corn and 2,000 contracts of soybeans and net sellers of 7,000 contracts of wheat.

- In 2021/22 (March - February) ethanol production in Brazil decreased by 9.3% compared to 2020/21, but the consumption of corn increased. The total production was 27.55 billion liters, including 3.47 billion liters of corn (+34.3% and a share of 12.5%).

- Truckers in Argentina have stopped the strike, which started on April 1, 2022.

- Egypt has included India in the authorized suppliers of wheat from 15.04.2022. The country is expected to import 1 million tons of Indian wheat, including 240,000 tons in April.
