Grain Highlights 28.02.2022

According to an analysis by Strategie Grains, the production and export of sunseed oil from Ukraine has been suspended for at least 1 month due to military operations in the country. It is very likely that the conflict will have a particularly strong impact on the oil segment.

- At the moment, the export of grain from Russian ports is proceeding at a normal pace. There is no cancellations of already signed supply contracts, but there are very few new ones. Traditional customers refrain from new purchases due to the risks associated with the conflict.

- The Ministry of Finance of Russia has obliged all exporters (not only grain) to sell to the state 80% of the currency received.

- According to the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, winter crops are in very good condition, above the long-term average.

- Over the week of February 21-27, wheat exports from the Russian port of Novorossiysk were 245,200 tons (-4% compared to the previous week). The largest buyers were Iran with 131,000 tons, Togo with 34,400 tons, Yemen with 31,000 tons, Libya with 27,500 tons and Sudan with 21,300 tons.

- The authorities in Moldova have banned the export of wheat and corn due to their shortage on the domestic market. This is partly due to the refugee wave.

- The state company of Egypt GASC today canceled the second consecutive tender for the purchase of wheat with delivery on April 13 - 26. Only three bids were submitted at the tender - two from France at prices of 389.92 - 399.00 USD/ton FOB and one from the USA at a price of 447.00 USD/ton FOB. There were no offers from the Black Sea region again. Egypt is actively looking for new purchases given the suspended supplies from Ukraine.

- According to Abiove's forecast, soyoil exports from Brazil will reach a record 1.7 million tons in 2022. The result will be achieved against the background of reduced exports of palm oil from Indonesia and the conflict in Ukraine. Exports will help producers overcome problems after reducing the required blending of biodiesel in the country. In January, soyoil exports were 170,300 tons, up from just 8,500 a year earlier. India has bought 140,000 tons of oil, the highest in 20 years.
